2026 Freight & Parcel Rate Benchmarks

As of October 2026, these are the figures HTL watches when pricing parcel programs and truckload lanes. Every number on this page is pulled live from HTL's internal market tape — the same feed that powers the ticker across this site — and nothing here is estimated or filled in by hand. Last refreshed October 17, 2026.

Diesel & fuel surcharge trend

Fuel surcharges on both parcel and truckload freight are indexed to published retail diesel. This is the current national on-highway average and its week-over-week move.

The diesel feed is temporarily unavailable. Check back shortly — we do not publish estimated fuel figures.

Freight economy & capacity trend

Economic series that lead freight pricing: truck transportation employment, warehousing activity, producer prices for freight services, and related indicators.

What this means for shippers

  1. 1.Fuel is a pass-through, not a fixed cost. Diesel moves weekly, and both parcel and truckload fuel surcharges are indexed to it — check that your surcharge table tracks the published index and not a stale internal one.
  2. 2.Quote FTL and LTL side by side in the 7-9 pallet band. When capacity loosens, truckload pricing often undercuts an LTL quote you would have accepted without checking.
  3. 3.Dimensional weight is where parcel spend leaks. Carriers bill the greater of actual and dimensional weight ((L x W x H) / 139), so box size changes hit the invoice faster than rate negotiation does.
  4. 4.Regulatory changes hit capacity before they hit rates. Watch federal rulemaking on hours of service, equipment, and broker transparency — capacity reacts first, pricing follows a quarter later.
  5. 5.Re-baseline your parcel contract against current market conditions at least annually. Discount tiers earned at last year's volume rarely match this year's shipping profile.

See your own numbers, not the market's

HTL runs a free parcel audit and savings analysis against your actual shipping data — no fees, no obligation, no platform change. Most shippers land between 10% and 25%.

Figures on this page are updated periodically and sourced from HTL's internal market tape, which aggregates the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis (FRED), the Federal Register, and freight trade press feeds. HTL does not publish carrier rates; rates are contract-specific and quoted per shipper.
